This Privacy Policy explains how Tax Debt Professionals, Inc., doing business as Turtle Tax (“we”, “us”, “our”), collects, uses and shares information when you use our services (the “Services”):
- Our website at https://www.turtletax.com;
- Our free Tax Debt Tool at https://www.tool.turtletax.com, which estimates your IRS options without asking for your name, Social Security number or payment details;

- Our emails, newsletter and customer support.
We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the IRS. We do not file anything with the IRS on your behalf: you review, sign and send your own forms.

Summary of key points
- We never ask for or store your Social Security number, EIN, date of birth, full account numbers or card numbers. On Turtle Tax forms, those fields print blank and you complete them by hand before signing.
- The free Tax Debt Tool needs no account. It asks for no name, Social Security number or credit card.
- Your Turtle Tax case is saved encrypted on your own device.
- We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for targeted advertising.
- We share information only with the service providers that run our Services (listed in Section 4), and with a Tax Pro only if you choose to send it to them yourself.
- You can ask us to access, correct or delete your information at connect@turtletax.com.
1. Information we never collect
Our Services are designed so that we never need your most sensitive identifiers:
- The Tax Debt Tool does not ask for your name, date of birth, Social Security number, EIN, account numbers or credit card.
- Turtle Tax never stores your Social Security number, EIN, date of birth or full account numbers. Those fields print blank on your completed forms, and you fill them in by hand before you sign and mail them.
- Card numbers and security codes are entered directly with our payment processor, Stripe. We never receive or store them.
2. Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account information. To use Turtle Tax, you create an account with your email address.
- Financial and household information you enter. To estimate your options and prepare your forms, you enter information such as your state and county, marital status, household size, whether household members are over 65, income, expenses, assets, debts, and the tax years and amounts you owe. Turtle Tax may also ask for information that appears on the IRS forms, such as names, addresses and employer details. This information is sent securely to our calculation service to compute your results. It is not stored on our servers after your result is calculated. Your Turtle Tax case is saved encrypted on your own device.
- Emailed reports. If you ask the Tax Debt Tool to email your estimate, we use your email address only to send that one report. The report is locked with a passcode shown on your screen. We do not keep a copy of the report, and we do not add your address to any mailing list unless you separately choose to sign up.
- Purchase information. When you buy Turtle Tax, Stripe processes your payment. We receive confirmation of your purchase: the plan purchased, the amount, the date and a transaction reference. We use this to give you access, handle upgrades, refunds and disputes, and keep accounting records. To apply our refund policy, we also record when you first view or download a completed IRS form under each purchase, and which form it was. This record holds dates and form names only, no financial information, and is also noted on your payment record at Stripe.
- If you sign up for our newsletter, we collect your first name and email address and use them only to send the newsletter.
- Messages to us. If you email or call us, we keep your message and our reply so that we can help you. Please do not send your Social Security number, bank account numbers or IRS documents by email.
- Tax Pro directory. If you are a tax professional listed in our directory, we publish the professional information you provide, such as your name, firm, credentials, location, contact details, languages spoken and photo.
Information collected automatically
When you use our Services, our servers and hosting providers automatically record technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you visit, and the date and time of your visit. We use it to keep the Services secure and working, and to diagnose problems.
3. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- provide the Services: calculate your estimate, prepare your forms, and save and restore your case;
- manage your account and sign you in securely;
- process purchases, upgrades, refunds and disputes;
- send service messages, such as sign-in codes, receipts, and the report you request;
- send our newsletter, only if you sign up;
- respond to your questions and provide support;
- protect the Services against fraud, abuse and security threats; and
- comply with the law and enforce our Terms & Conditions.
We do not use the financial information you enter for advertising, and we do not sell it.
4. When and with whom we share information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising.
Service providers
We share information only with service providers that help us run the Services, under contracts that limit how they may use it:
| Provider | What they do |
| Clerk | Account sign-in and verification emails |
| Stripe | Payment processing |
| Amazon Web Services | Hosting, our calculation service and emailed reports |
| WP Engine | Website hosting |
| Google Workspace | Our business email |
| Google Fonts and YouTube | Fonts and embedded videos on our website |
| Zippopotam.us | Our Tax Pro finder sends the ZIP code you enter to this service to locate nearby professionals |
Tax Pros
We do not share your information with any Tax Pro. If you choose to send your estimate or forms to a Tax Pro, you send them directly to that professional’s own email or secure portal; they do not pass through us. Tax Pros are independent professionals and are responsible for how they handle your information.
Legal requirements and business transfers
We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena or other legal process, or to protect the rights, safety and property of our users or the public. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Privacy Policy.
5. How long we keep information
- Tax Debt Tool: the figures you enter are used to calculate your estimate and are not kept. Emailed reports are not kept.
- Turtle Tax cases: stored encrypted on your device and under your control. Each saved case is deleted automatically 24 months after you last open or save it; opening a case restarts that period, and the app shows the date for each case. You can also delete a case yourself at any time. Closing your account does not delete the copy on your device; remove it in the app or by clearing your browser’s data for app.turtletax.com.
- Account and purchase records: kept while you have an account, and for seven years after your account closes or your last purchase, whichever is later, for tax, accounting, refund and dispute purposes. After you close your account, we keep only what those purposes require: your email address, what you bought, the amounts and dates, and refund records. Your purchase itself does not expire while you have an account.
- Security and audit logs: kept for up to 400 days. They record events such as sign-ins, purchases and refund requests, not the financial figures you enter.
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
- Messages to us: as long as needed to resolve your request, and then for three years after your request is resolved. Messages about a purchase, refund or dispute are kept with your purchase records for seven years.
When we no longer need information, we delete or anonymize it.
6. How we protect information
- All information is encrypted in transit using HTTPS.
- Your Turtle Tax case is encrypted on your device.
- Emailed reports are protected with AES-256 encryption and a passcode shown only on your screen.
- We never store Social Security numbers, EINs, dates of birth, full account numbers or card numbers.
- Access to our systems is limited to people who need it, using strong authentication.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Please keep your device, passcodes and downloaded reports private.
7. Cookies and similar technologies
Our website uses a small number of cookies and similar technologies that are needed for it to work, such as remembering your language choice, submitting forms and keeping administrators signed in. Embedded YouTube videos and Google Fonts may set cookies or record your IP address, under Google’s own policies. No analytics or advertising cookies are used. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; some parts of the website may not work without them.
8. Children
Our Services are intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us information, contact connect@turtletax.com and we will delete it.
9. Your choices and rights
- Access, correction and deletion. You can ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, by emailing connect@turtletax.com.
- Your account. Sign in to My Turtle Tax to review your account, or email us to close it. When you close your account, we delete your account information, except records we must keep for legal, tax, accounting or dispute purposes (Section 5).
- Information on your device. Your Turtle Tax case is stored on your device, so you control it directly and can delete it at any time.
- Unsubscribe using the link in any newsletter email. We will still send service messages, such as receipts and sign-in codes.
We will respond within the time required by applicable law, and we may need to verify your identity first. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
10. Additional rights for US state residents
Depending on where you live, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia, you may have the right to know, access, correct and delete your personal information, obtain a copy of it, and opt out of its sale, its use for targeted advertising, or certain profiling.
